Preparing For Your PET Scan

  •          Wear warm, loose comfortable clothes as the temperature in the scan room may be cool. Please clothing with zippers, snaps, and underwire bras.
  •          Plan to spend approximately 2 hours in our department to complete your exam.
  •          Continue to take your prescribed medications, EXCEPT, on the day of your exam, DO NOT, take your insulin and or diuretic ( e.g. Lasix or other water pills).   
  •          No over the counter medications.
  •          If you are claustrophobic, please ask your referring physician to prescribe medication for you prior to you arriving to your appointment.
  •          The technologist will check your blood sugar level prior to your exam.
  •          If you are diabetic, and your blood sugar has been consistently above 200mg/dl before your schedule PET/CT exam, please call 775-445-5500 and a radiologist will be contacted and determine, if we can proceed with your exam
  •          If you are a “brittle” or severe diabetic, please request to be schedule at the first time slot of the day

PET Scan diet - The intent of this diet is to promote a low carbohydrate state to increase the image quality of the FDG-PET scan and its ability to detect increased metabolically active tissue. The diet contains minimal amounts of carbohydrates. Please avoid physical activity or excessive exercise 24-48 prior to your exam.

Food allowed 1 day before the test.

  •          All meats (beef, pork, poultry, fish, etc.) eggs, hard cheese, tofu, and unsweetened peanut butter.
  •          Non-starchy vegetables (green beans, broccoli, spinach, zucchini and lettuce)
  •          Water or coffee with no cream or sugar.
  •          Margarine, butter and oils.

 Foods NOT allowed 1 day before the test.

  •          Peas, corn, potatoes and beans
  •          Milk and non-dairy drinks, no cream cheese or cheese spread
  •          Fruit and fruit juice
  •          Soda or alcohol
  •          All cereals, grains, pastas and breads
  •          Sugar, honey, jams, and candy
  •          Gravy or cream based sauces
  •          Any food with more than 5 grams of carbohydrates

Day of the test:

  •          No food or drink except water, 6 hours prior to PET/CT scan
  •          Drink several (2-6 glasses) of water prior to the test. It is okay to have one cup of BLACK coffee with no additives the morning of the test; no sugar, no cream or sweetener of any sort
  •          Take all prescribed medications, except your diabetic medications and/or your diuretic medications; you will bring these with you to the test

Preparing For Your Nuclear Medicine Stress Test

  • DO NOT have caffeine/decaf coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, energy drinks, Anacin, Tylenol, Excedrin or any other migraine/headache medications for 12 hours prior to test
  • DO NOT take medication, eat or drink beverages other than water 4 hours prior to test.  PLEASE DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
  • DO NOT take Viagra, Levitra or Cialis 72 hours prior to test
  • DO NOT take Beta Blocker medication 24 hours prior to test (examples: Atenolol, Metoprolol, Carvedilol/Coreg)
  • DO NOT take nitrates (example: Imdur, Nitro patch)
  • DO NOT apply lotions or creams to the chest or abdomen
  • Please bring a fatty snack to eat on a break
  • Please wear a loose plain shirt without metal buttons, snaps, pins or zippers.  Short sleeve with sleeves above your elbow.  No dresses

Preparing For Your Nuclear Medicine Pharmacologic (Lexiscan) Stress Test

  • DO NOT have caffeine/decaf coffee, tea, soda, chocolate, energy drinks, Anacin, Tylenol, Excedrin or any other migraine/headache medications for 12 hours prior to test
